The School of Journalism and Communication is recruiting three research assistants to support an upcoming conference on political journalism in Canada, which is being held Nov. 15-17 at Carleton University’s Richcraft Hall.

The conference, supported with funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and hosted by Carleton’s School of Journalism and Communication, has been undertaken in partnership with fellow journalism schools at Toronto Metropolitan University, University of King’s College and the University of Quebec at Montreal, as well as the Canadian Association of Journalists, the Public Policy Forum and The Hill Times.

The three students will work under the supervision of journalism faculty members on a digital team producing news and other content for the conference website, posting items to the Carleton journalism program’s social media accounts, and performing other tasks in support of conference organizers.

The conference, Reimagining Political Journalism: Perils and Possibilities, is exploring the state of political journalism in Canada and will feature a number of the country’s leading reporters, columnists, journalism educators and other high-profile panelists engaged in national affairs.

The three selected applicants will be expected to attend all conference events scheduled on Friday, Nov. 15 (7-10 p.m.), Saturday, Nov. 16 (8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.) and Sunday, Nov. 17 (9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)  Some other work will be required in the weeks leading up to the conference, as well as during the hours on conference weekend immediately before and after scheduled events.

The successful applicants will be paid for approximately 33 hours of work at a rate of $30 per hour, with benefits. Any costs incurred during this work will also be covered.

Applications are welcome from third- and fourth-year undergraduate journalism students and from current Master of Journalism students. The successful applicants will be engaged directly in supporting the event and generating media content that will be shared in real time on a digital platform dedicated to the conference proceedings. The intent is to publish comprehensive, richly detailed coverage of each day’s discussions and related content.

Applications are due before Friday, Nov. 1 @ 11:59 p.m.

Questions about any of the above should be addressed to Prof. Randy Boswell by email at randy.boswell@carleton.ca
