Journalism in Indigenous Communities Matters
Do you want to be part of the new wave of Indigenous journalists and media storytellers making a difference in Indigenous communities and newsrooms across Turtle Island?
Our community members consume news daily – whether from a community radio station, a First Nation newsletter, podcasts, social media feeds, mainstream media newscasts and newspapers, or all of the above. Whatever the medium, we look for news stories that inform, entertain, and assist us in building prosperous futures for our Nations.
Apply for our Certificate in Journalism in Indigenous Communities (CJIIC) and start telling stories that will change the world.
Community-Based Learning
Spearheaded by Carleton’s School of Journalism and Communication in Ottawa, Ontario, the CJIIC is a 10-month program offering in-person and virtual instruction – delivered by Indigenous journalists – that provides Indigenous students the opportunity to learn introductory journalism and media skills, based in your own community.
Ongoing Support
The CJIIC is a braided learning experience, where student support services and cultural support provided by Indigenous Institute partners Kenjgewin Teg and First Nations Technical Institute will be key contributors to your success.
Opening Pathways
In the CJIIC, you’ll learn the journalism fundamentals that will help you enhance and grow community-based media making and news delivery. Upon completion, if you’re interested in more journalism training or an arts education, the CJIIC is a pathway to advanced standing in Carleton’s Bachelor of Journalism program, an undergraduate degree at Carleton University or other post-secondary institutions.
