Biography

Yannick Mutombo is an emerging cultural critic, freelance journalist, and communications specialist with a focus on music journalism, migration, and diasporic communities. In 2021, he was recognized by Great Canadian Longform as one of its New Faces of Canadian Journalism, an honor that affirmed his dedication to thoughtful, high-quality storytelling. His work has appeared in publications such as Maisonneuve, This Magazine, The Philanthropist Journal, and SHIFTER Magazine, where he explores the intersection of sound, social context, and identity.

Throughout his career, Yannick has balanced rigorous fact-checking and archival research with creative narrative nonfiction. He has covered refugee and newcomer experiences in Canada, grounding his reporting in careful verification and community-centered interviewing. More recently, his focus has shifted toward cultural reporting, examining the forces shaping contemporary music and how culture travels across borders.

Yannick holds a deep commitment to ethical journalism that challenges assumptions and expands representation. After completing the Master of Journalism program at Carleton University, he hopes to build a career blending multimedia storytelling with long-form investigation, foregrounding voices that are often overlooked in mainstream coverage. He is eager to bring his culturally informed perspective and passion for public-interest journalism to the Master of Journalism cohort.
