- Agusta
Hello! Bonjour! My name is Agusta Caetano-Pavão, I am in my third year of studying French here at Carleton, and I am really excited to be participating in Linguavision again! The song I am performing this year is the French translation of one of my favourite childhood songs “Out there” from The Hunchback of Notre dame, or “Rien qu’un jour” as it would be called. In all honesty, my goal was to choose a song that was recognizable and perform it in a way that won’t be. It is a great song with a great message of getting out of one’s comfort zone and seizing the day. I can’t wait to see everyone’s performances this year, the show is going to be great!

Hi, I’m Anna! I’m a Computer Science major with a hidden background in the arts – I’ve been in many musicals, dances, and song performances. I’ve listened to French pop music since I was 14, and I’ve been learning a bit of Spanish as well, so I thought I’d try my hand at a song in both languages. “Lo Mismo” is an interesting collab between world-famous French pop artist Maître Gims and Spanish-speaking Alvaro Soler – I’m singing both parts!
- Rahnesse

Salut tout le monde! My name is Rahnesse and I am a third-year psych student, I’ve been learning French for most of my life, but I feel like I don’t use it that often and am not really confident in my speaking skills. I entered this competition to get out of my comfort zone and try something new by putting myself out there. I wasn’t going to do it at first because I was scared but I want to push past my fears and challenge myself. As a Christian I let my faith inform my song choice and this song is one of my favourite French worship songs. I’ve also been going through a lot and I really see how God has been there for me, so I really wanted to sing something meaningful to me personally, and something that might encourage someone. The whole song is about how important it is to praise God and how just thinking about His Holiness is reason to praise Jesus.
I think French is such a passionate language and there’s something about singing in French that just hits different and when I discovered French worship, it helped me make my language skills more meaningful and personal. So I’m excited and looking forward to the competition. I want to bring the Holy Ghost Fire to the stage!!!🔥🔥🔥😜

Hallo! My name is Sophia and I am a first-year student hoping to minor in German. I don’t sing, but I already learn German song lyrics for fun, so this seemed like a practical use of such a hobby. I partake in many various activities. The only way to find out what happens is to get there, so see you there :)

Hello, this is Diego, back again at Linguavision! I’m a Third Year Film Studies student with a minor in Japanese. You will probably find me in the Kendo Club, art club, and possibly other places. I am also helping out with Spanish Conversation group. I enjoy to sing in Spanish, English and Japanese!

I’m a third-year student in the Honours Biology Program, and I’ve been singing for longer than I can remember. I first fell in love with Japanese mythology and culture when I was around twelve years old, and started learning to sing in Japanese by the time I was fourteen. However, this year was my first chance to start learning how to actually speak the language.
- Temi
-
Hiii!! I’m Temi, and I will be preforming in the Japanese category for linguavision! I’ve never done something like this before so I’m super excited to be participating. I’ve been interested in Japanese for a while and initially started learning it because I love anime and wanted to voice act (big dreams I know), but I fell in love with J-pop and haven’t turned back since. Music has always been important to me, and I would love to inspire people with my performance to get into J-pop. I believe there a J-pop song for everyone, from the intricate harmonies that complement beautiful melodies to the genius lyricism and songs that encompass all at once, I implore you to patronize the art of J-pop and I hope to blow you all away with my stage. みんなで一緒に頑張ろう‼

Hello guys! I’m a first-year international student in computer science, and I’m learning Japanese as one of my interests. I’m having 2nd year intensive Japanese this semester. The reason I decided to participate in this contest is that I enjoy anime and Japanese music very much, and it is also a good opportunity to improve my Japanese and my ability to perform something in public.
- Jacob Swayty
Hello! My name is Jacob and I am a second-year student at Carleton University in Global and International Studies, with a specialization in Law and aspiring to complete the CTESL certification. I will be performing a mashup of two songs at Linguavision this year, being in Japanese and Korean! Personally, I have always been interested in learning about the various cultures around the world, and I believe that learning the language is one way of further appreciating the cultures that we are all surrounded by! I have been motivated to compete in the Linguavision contest this year as I have always loved both listening to music and appreciating the various differences in musicality based on genre, style, artistic choices, and especially between languages/cultures. With this in mind, I am HYPED about being able to combine my love for languages and music and although I have very little experience performing in front of a crowd, I have always loved doing karaoke and am looking forward to the concert! In the future, I hope to become near fluent in both languages, and be able to communicate effectively with any new friends I make along the way!
In terms of the song choices, the Japanese song “Where Our Blue Is” was created as an opening track for the anime Jujutsu Kaisen. It carries a nostalgic, “teenage fever/youthful” vibe that really resonates with me. The song heavily reminds me of summer 2023, where my friends and I would practice volleyball almost daily, and enjoy our youth together (as the song, and the plot of the anime also suggest). It is THE summer 2023 anthem. Contrastingly so, the Korean song, “Still With You” is a melancholic song that I would consider to be a borderline new-gen classic. Thus, I will be performing a summer-driven Japanese track, and a Korean track reminds me of the Winter and its all of its beauty. I have had lots of fun learning Korean and Japanese, and I am genuinely excited to continue learning both languages and share my passion of both music and languages with you all during my performance! I look forward to seeing the other performances as well and I wish all the other performers the best of luck!

Hey, I’m Iris, and I will be performing in the Korean Category at Linguavision this year! I have been a fan of the Korean language for a long time, my interest piqued when I discovered TWICE when their debut show SIXTEEN was airing. Since then I have been listening to KPOP, watching dramas and trying to expand my worldview passed what I know here in Canada. I’m going to be performing Downpour by I.O.I (rip I.O.I :,) ), so stay tuned for what I’ll bring to Linguavision. 제가 잘 노래를 불러 거예요, 자 이따봐요 ˚ʚ♡ɞ˚

- ALYN
-
Lynda (stage name ‘ALYN’) is a singer/rapper and songwriter and has been performing online on various platforms in English and Korean for almost a decade. She started her journey by making video edits of her favourite anime and kpop groups and then slowly turned to online kpop cover group communities to meet like-minded individuals. ALYN now mainly posts kpop covers on her Youtube channel in between studying at Carleton in the final year of her Communications program. ALYN decided to learn Korean because of how inspired she became when watching kpop groups like EXO, SHINee, and TWICE perform and hopes to be on a big stage like them one day. Improving her craft has been a steep slope, so please support her (or else <3) and enjoy her dramatic singing and enticing stage presence.

- Kai

Hi! My name is Kai, I am majoring in applied linguistics and minoring in both Mandarin Chinese and Korean, and I will be singing in Chinese for Linguavision. I really love Chinese music, so I am excited to be able to perform one of my favourite songs! I first decided I wanted to learn Chinese after I started watching Taiwanese dramas in middle school, and was so excited when I found out Carleton offered it as a minor. Through watching dramas I started listen to Taiwanese music and C-Pop, then later began listening to music from many Chinese-speaking regions. I am very excited to get to share this song, and I hope that everyone enjoys it!

I’m Hemi, I’m a first-year business student taking Spanish as an elective. I’ve always wanted to learn Spanish because it’s a language I really like, even from my childhood when I used to watch Latinoamerican teen TV shows. So I decided to perform the song “Somos Uno” from the Netflix original series “Go! Vive A Tu Manera” because it’s a series that reminds me of the good old days. The title of this song can be translated as “we are one”, which sums up the song’s central theme of unity. So “Somos Uno” is not just a song, it’s a call to embrace our collective humanity, the power of solidarity and the conviction that together we can overcome obstacles and achieve greatness.
