Grant Dawson received his PhD from Carleton (2003) and has worked in the federal government and higher education sectors since 2003. In addition to a research post with the Library of Parliament, Dawson has taught in the Departments of History and of Political Science, Carleton University; the Department of International Relations, Xiamen University, China (as 2012 Visiting Scholar); and the Department of International Politics, Aberystwyth University, United Kingdom. From 2009-2014, he was Deputy Director of the David Davies Memorial institute of International Studies, Department of International Politics, Aberystwyth University. Among his publications are the book Here is Hell: Canada’s Engagement in Somalia (University of British Columbia Press, 2007) and journal articles “Contact Africa: Canadian foreign policy, the contact group, and southern Africa,” International Journal 64.2 (Spring 2009): 521-36; and “Player, partner and friend: Canada’s Africa policy since 1945”, International Politics 50.3 (May 2013): 412–34. His research interests are peacekeeping / peacebuilding, intervention, civil / ethnic warfare, normative theory, cosmopolitanism, and Canada’s foreign policy towards Africa.
