Research Topic: Imagining the West: Historical Views of Western Canada Through the Lens of “Indian” Postcards
My current research project involves the examination of representations of First Nations individuals on early Western Canadian postcards in their images, captions, and written messages. I am particularly interested in treating these postcards not only as examples of visual culture but also material culture. Postcards aided in the the dissemination of popular (mis)conceptions of a region and its peoples far outside the area in which they were produced and they also often reveal intriguing “imaginary encounters” between the postcard writers and those pictured on the reverse.
