Areas of Research: Oliver studies the intersection of native-newcomer relations in the formative years of the fur trade. He is primarily interested in the modes of exchange that occurred in what has been referred to as the “middle ground” of cultural contact. His studies currently range from the experiences of early Hudson’s Bay company employees, while also the enterprising French traders representing the interests of the administration of New France. Essentially, he is looking to see how the practices of the early fur trade were adapted to meet the ideas of indigenous groups.
