International students studying in Canada must have health insurance. The University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) is administered by the ISSO. Please review the details below for information specific to students studying outside of Canada, students who completed their studies in Fall 2020, and new students for the Winter 2021 term.
Students Studying Outside Canada: Opting out of UHIP
If you have not been in Canada since September 1st, 2020 and have remained outside Canada, you can opt-out of UHIP as it’s not required. Please complete the UHIP opt-out form found on the ISSO’s UHIP website. If you opted-out of the plan for the Fall 2020 term, but plan on coming to Carleton during the winter, please email isso@carleton.ca to request that you be reinstated in UHIP. The deadline to opt-out of UHIP coverage is Wednesday, March 31st.
If you have chosen or choose to leave Canada voluntarily during the academic year, your UHIP cannot be terminated as it will cover some emergency out-of-country expenses. No refund will apply in this case.
Students Who Graduated in Fall 2020
If Fall 2020 was your last term of study and you are graduating in February or June 2021, your UHIP coverage expired December 31. You can extend your UHIP to June 30, 2021 (6 months) at a premium of $360 (single coverage). Find more details on the ISSO’s previous news post about extending coverage past graduation.
New Students for Winter 2021
Students coming to Canada for Winter 2021 term classes will have their UHIP health card sent to their Carleton email by mid-December. Be sure to print off and carry with you as you will likely have to show proof of health insurance. There is a supplemental drug/dental plan for Carleton students. The Carleton University Students’ Association (CUSA) administers the plan for undergraduate students and the Graduate Students’ Association (GSA) administers a plan for graduate students. If you are starting classes in Winter 2021, enrolment is not automatic and you will need to opt in once you arrive in January. The GSA opt-in deadline is February 16.
