Quantum Computing – Grades 11 & 12*

Note: This course will not be offered in 2018/19.

*Refers to the level of mathematics and not to the actual age.

This is a challenging course on Quantum Computing. Quantum Computers potentially have powers far superior to the computers we use today. Theoretical foundations (mathematics and physics) of quantum computing are solid, but there are significant obstacle in technology. There exist first prototypes of quantum computers (including those made by a Canadian company), but these are still far off from reaching their full potential. The goal of this course is to understand Shor’s Quantum Algorithm for integer factorization. When implemented, this algorithm is capable of breaking most of the cryptography that we use today in the Internet communications.

This course will combine Quantum mechanics, Algebra and Computer Science.

Pre-requisite/Co-requisite: students must have either completed Algebra and Trigonometry course offered by Math Enrichment Centre, or be registered in that course concurrently. No exceptions!
