Rafael Palma Mungioli is an Economist (University of São Paulo) with a Master’s in International Political Economy (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro). He is currently a PhD student in Political Science at Carleton University, where he is following the collaborative program in Political Economy. His specializations are Development Studies, International Political Economy and Brazilian Political Economy.
Rafael’s research focuses on the political economy of the rise of the far right in Brazil. His dissertation project aims to understand the effects of the Brazilian economic structure over the country’s political framework, exploring the interaction between class interests, ideologies, policies and the international system. He is supervised by Dr. Laura Macdonald.
Rafael has 13 years of professional experience in the Brazilian Development Bank (2009-2022), where he worked in different divisions and conducted research on the Brazilian manufacturing sector. His Master’s thesis analysed the “national champions” policy allegedly executed by the bank during the 2010s. Rafael has been awarded with Carleton’s Directors of the Institute of Political Economy Prize (2023), and his research has been funded by SSHRC (2024-2026) and OGS (2023-2024).
