COMP 6907 - PhD Comprehensive Examination Specification

  • This form is to be completed by the thesis supervisor and submitted at least three weeks before the examination date. Written exams are to be held between 9am - 4pm.

    Please note: the chair of a comprehensive oral cannot be an assistant professor. It needs to be an OCICS member at the rank of associate or full professor. The chair of a comprehensive oral cannot be a supervisor or co-supervisor.

  • The Thesis Supervisor is responsible for CHOOSING and CONFIRMING the following committee members:
  • Please note: The chair of a comprehensive oral cannot be an assistant professor. It needs to be an OCICS member at the rank of associate or full professor.

    The chair of a comprehensive oral cannot be a supervisor or co-supervisor.
  • Comprehensive Fields

    Indicate the fields being tested and by which members (usually one major and two minors).

    Please provide your preferred Date and Time for the exam and we will do our best to accommodate that. In case we can't secure a space for that particular time and date, we will contact you with other options available.
  • Written Comprehensive

    The written exams should be given to the Graduate Advisor at least two weeks before the day of the exam. Instructions should be clear as to time allowed per set of questions, whether an open book is permitted, and it should comply with the previous agreements. It will be ideal if the member can provide contact details to the Graduate Advisor in case the student has questions during the exam.

    All exams will be in-person and invigilated by Graduate Advisors. The dates and hours of the written exams will be determined by Graduate Advisors based on the date for Oral Exam and after negotiating with the student.
  • Oral Comprehensive

    The Thesis Supervisor is responsible for confirming that all members are available for this date/time.

    The oral examination is a usually held within a week of the written examinations.
