Using comics to teach about mobile online privacy

Leah Zhang-Kennedy, Sonia Chiasson, Robert Biddle

Abstract

Users’ privacy is increasingly being jeopardized by images uploaded using smartphones. These images have detailed metadata that can be used maliciously. We designed an on- line interactive comic to study whether this kind of teaching media can e ectively communicate to end-users about the risks associated with mobile online privacy. We present the learning outcomes of our comic prototype based on compar- isons of a pretest questionnaire with a follow-up question- naire one week later. We found signi cant improvements in participants’ understanding and the majority of users re- ported positive changes in mobile privacy behaviour.
