Seasoned CBC journalist Anna Marie Tremonti was awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, “in recognition of a distinguished journalism career that has provided reportage from events across Canada and around the world.”
Host of CBC Radio’s current affairs program, The Current, since 2002, Ms. Tremonti has never been afraid of controversy over her nearly 30-year career in radio and television. She began her career in private broadcasting in 1978 in Nova Scotia after graduating from the University of Windsor with a degree in communication studies.
She later moved to television as a local reporter for CBC Edmonton and eventually to CBC’s The National. In 1991, Ms. Tremonti moved to Berlin as a foreign correspondent for The National, and was honoured with two Geminis for her coverage of the war in Bosnia and the death of Princess Diana.
She also spent three years in Jerusalem covering the Arab-Israeli conflict. In 2000, she joined CBC Television’s investigative documentary program, The Fifth Estate, and won a Gracie Allen Award from American Women in Radio and Television. She has also received an Outstanding Achievement Award from Women in Film and Television Toronto and a Radio and Television News Directors Award.
