Chaviva Hošek

Chaviva Hošek was awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, at the 9:30 a.m. ceremony on Thursday, June 7, “in recognition of a transformational rale in advancing Canada’s reputation as a global leader in the international research community.

Chaviva Hošek was president and CEO of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) from 2001-2012. Prior to going to CIFAR, she was director of policy and research in the Prime Minister’s Office for Prime Minister Jean Chrétien from 1993-2000. Her career also includes a term.

As Minister of Housing for the Province of Ontario and a 13-year Period as professor of English Literature at the University of Toronto. She has served University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia. She serves on the boards of the Central European University, the Leading Edge Endowment Fund of British Columbia, Maple Leaf Foods Inc., Great-West Lifeco Inc., and the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation, andis a Governor of the Council of Canadian Academies.

She was given the Public Policy Forum Outstanding Performance Award in 2003 and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee and Diamond Jubilee medals. She has received three honorary degrees, is an Officer of the Order of Canada and the Lawson Foundation Fellow of CIFAR.
