Maude Barlow, national chairperson of the Council of Canadians, will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, at the 9:30 a.m. ceremony on Thursday, June 10, “in recognition of her passionate commitment and tireless efforts to promote social justice ”

Ms. Barlow is a founding member of the Council of Canadians and has served as its voluntary chair since 1988 Under her leadership, the group has become a leading voice for social, environmental, economic and trade justice. It fights to protect Canada’s public social programs, natural resource heritage and democratic decision-making practices It also advocates for fair trade and sustainable economic policies and promotes a peacekeeping role for Canada’s Armed Forces.

Ms. Barlow also chairs the board of Washington-based Food and Water Watch, is an executive member of the San Francisco-based International Forum onGlobalization and is a councillor with the Hamburg-based World Future Council Her Carleton honorary degree will be the 10th she’s received. Ms Barlow has many awards including the 2005 Right Livelihood Award (known as the alternative Nobel), the Citation of Lifetime Achievement at the 2008 Canadian Environment Awards and the 2009 Earth Day Canada Outstanding Environmental Achievement Award.

She is the best-selling author or co-author of 16 books, including the international bestseller “Blue Covenant The Global Water Crisis” and “The Coming Battle for the Right to Water.”
