A peace and security expert and a highly respected diplomat, William H. Barton was awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, at the 9:30 a.m. ceremony on Wednesday, June 11, “in recognition of an outstanding contribution to Canada’s role in world affairs and the advancement of global disarmament.”
Representing Canada on the international stage as conciliator and negotiator for four decades, Mr. Barton has done much to enhance Canada’s reputation abroad. He has served as Canadian ambassador to the United Nations, president of the United Nations Security Council and Canadian representative on the Conference on the Committee on Disarmament.
He is the founding chairman of the Canadian Institute for International Peace and Security and last year created The William and Jeannie Barton Chair in International Affairs at Carleton University’s Norman Paterson School of International Affairs. This latter position will enhance the understanding of arms control and disarmament issues worldwide.
Mr. Barton also endowed the William Barton Award in Arms Control and Disarmament for annual presentation to a graduate student pursuing research in international security, arms control or disarmament. He was appointed to the Order of Canada in 1994 and has received honorary degrees from the University of British Columbia and Mount Allison University.
