Journalism students at Carleton University can take advantage of an opportunity to work with CBC North through an internship program that is exclusive to Carleton.

This two-month, paid internship can be taken up this spring or summer with CBC North in Yellowknife, capital of the Northwest Territories. Start date for the internship is open to negotiation with CBC North but is likely to be this May or June.

All students in Carleton’s journalism program are eligible to apply, but preference will be given to students who are in their graduating year or in the senior years of the program. The internships are open to both Bachelor of Journalism and MJ students.

Applications are due on Friday, April 15 at 5 p.m. The application form can be found at this link.

Applicants must submit:

  • A current CV
  • A brief statement of intent outlining why you are interested in covering Canada’s North (250 words)
  • A brief synopsis of two story ideas about Canada’s North that you would like to pitch to CBC North
  • The names of two references who can speak to your journalistic work.
  • Applicants must also attest to their Covid-19 vaccination status and must be double-vaccinated to be considered for the position.

The objective of the collaboration is for CBC North Region and the School of Journalism and Communication at Carleton University to provide students enrolled in the journalism program with an opportunity to acquire knowledge and experience relating to the duties and activities of an editorial assistant in a northern newsroom.

Offered annually, this paid summer internship will provide reporting and writing experience to a student who has expressed a desire to learn more about Canada’s North and its Indigenous peoples. This unique internship will help young journalists better understand the history, diversity and realities of the North and Indigenous peoples through the provision of a work experience that can inform their journalism for the rest of their careers.

This is a paid internship opportunity in which students will be placed with CBC North. The student will intern as an editorial assistant for a two-month term with the option of extending the internship being at the discretion of CBC North. Carleton University has established a donor fund, named in honour of Mary McGuire, to support student travel and/or assist with accommodation during the student’s internship, if relocation is required.
