October 28 2024 – Carleton University’s School of Journalism and Communication is proud to congratulate Assistant Professor Matthew Pearson (Journalism), who was recently announced as a recipient of the Carleton University New Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award.
Each year, this award is presented to new faculty members who are in the first five years of their appointment at Carleton. Recipients must have demonstrated a commitment to teaching excellence, and be using innovative, unique, or engaging teaching techniques in their classroom.
Pearson now joins his colleagues Trish Audette-Longo and Brett Popplewell as recipients of the award, making him the third Journalism faculty member since 2021 to receive a New Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award.
Pearson joined the School of Journalism and Communication in 2022, following a 20-year journalism career that included a decade at the Ottawa Citizen, producing a feature radio documentary for CBC’s The Sunday Edition, and a stint as an associate producer with CBC Radio. During Pearson’s time as the 2017 Michener-Deacon Fellow for Journalism Education, he focused on teaching students how to cover traumatic incidents and to report on people who have experienced trauma. This innovative work has continued during his time at Carleton, both in his teaching and research practices. In May of this year, he traveled to Thailand to deliver capacity-building workshops on trauma and self-care to journalists living in and reporting on Myanmar, where press freedom has been tightly curtailed following a coup in 2021. He is a graduate of Carleton’s Master of Journalism program.
More information about the award, as well as a full list of past winners, can be found on Carleton’s Teaching Awards website.
