Graduate Association for Film Studies (GAFFS)
Welcome to the Graduate Association for Film Studies, aka GAFFS!
Graduate school can sometimes feel lonely and hard to navigate, so why not change that? GAFFS is a student-led graduate society aimed at providing academic support and financial resources to our members throughout the school year. While this initiative is mainly intended to serve current Carleton University students enrolled in the Film Studies MA program, we believe in an interdisciplinary approach to our work and welcome other graduate-level students from related fields (such as those in ICSLAC and SSAC) to participate.
By providing access to funding and stable institutional support, we want to give students the opportunity to organize various events (such as public screenings, film workshops, and coffee hour socials) around campus. Additionally, we aim to provide access to academic information on scholarships, future career planning, and campus-related resources so students feel more well-informed as they navigate their academic careers. Finally, we strive to offer our members a diverse range of filmic perspectives by introducing them to various filmmakers, students, and on-screen representations through internal events. So come join our group and help strengthen a sense of community!
GAFFS can mean a variety of things, such as a hook or to deceive someone. In our case, it’s an abbreviation, a reference to an all-purpose tape, or a commemoration to gaffers. You’d better believe that there is nothing deceitful about GAFFS being the all-purpose adhesive for Graduate Film Studies at Carleton University.
