Here’s an opportunity to make a difference in an outstanding undergraduate history student’s life. As part of Philanthropy Month, a charitable donation on Tuesday, December 2 to the History Administrators Anniversary Scholarship can turn a $40 gift into $75.

About Giving Tuesday

Why Tuesday?  December 2 is “Giving Tuesday” in Canada.  This is a day devoted to encouraging philanthropic donation, a new fundraising idea being implemented this year in support of many worthy causes.  The History Administrators’ Anniversary Scholarship is especially appropriate this December given that our chief office administrator retires at the end of the month.

This Giving Tuesday, donate to the History Administrator’s Anniversary Scholarship.

Of The History Department, For The History Department

The scholarship was established in 2013 when all three of our office staff marked the 40th anniversary of their service to Carleton.  These are our frontline staff who have helped so many students to negotiate the treacherous shoals of university and departmental regulations. It is characteristic of their selflessness that they wanted a gift to mark their collective 120 years of service to go to the students and not to themselves.

The scholarship will be given to an outstanding student proceeding from the second to the third year of an Honours BA in History. The scholarship, to be administered by faculty, will provide meaningful support to students as they transition into third year, a critical year for attaining grades for admission to graduate programs and professional degrees.   This award differs from entrance scholarships, as it recognizes student achievement in a university setting.

With Donation Matching, Even A Modest Gift Can Make a Big Difference

In the context of Giving Tuesday, both Carleton University and the Department of History are prepared to match donations towards our goal of creating a long term scholarship for our students. For donations made online to designated Carleton University projects on that day, Carleton University Alumni Association and private donors will match by HALF any donation made.  A $40 donation brings $60 to the scholarship.

Matching Funds Are Limited

There is a $500 cap per gift, and up to $20,000 total matching funds available, so that donations made early in the day are more likely to receive matching contributions. Of course, while donation matching starts on Tuesday at 12:00 AM, people can make contributions to the fund throughout the weekend and on Monday.

When we reach $4000 the Department has pledged to contribute $1000, making the original $40 donation effectively $75.  All contributions are charitable donations and donors will receive an official tax receipt via Canada Post.
