Eihei-ji (The Temple of Eternal Peace), is the leading monastery of the Soto Zen Buddhist sect founded by the monk Dōgen, in western Japan. Dōgen also designed the compound, whose wooden structures are over 700 years old. The Australian-made 1977 documentary focuses on a group of young Japanese professionals coping with the spiritual and physical challenges of austere and Spartan Zen monastic life in the second half of the twentieth century.
