Description of Research:
My thesis project focuses on public opinion used as a political tool in Eighteenth Century France in the pre-revolutionary and Revolutionary period. I specifically look at the rise of print culture and the act of discussion and dialogue in public spaces around Paris — including cafés, coffeehouses, street corners, and restaurants. My previous research looked at the rumours started about the unpopular results of the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, and the conflict between Bonnie Prince Charlie and Louis XV. I hope to continue this work by looking more in-depth at the spaces in which public opinion thrived around Paris during the 1789 Revolution.
