The Carleton University Human Rights Society and the Womyn’s Centre will be hosting an event discussing sex work in Canada on Wednesday, December 2nd. The event includes a speech from Terri-Jean Bedford, the woman who took Canada’s prostitution laws to the Supreme Court of Canada for violating the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Mrs. Bedford will discuss the legal process of bringing the Canadian government to court, her experiences as a sex worker, and the difficulties with Canada’s previous and new prostitution laws. In doing this, she will raise awareness about the complexities around the issue of sex work and its current legal status in Canada and initiate thought provoking discussion among students regarding these important issues. This event will also include a panel discussion including representatives from the community to discuss the complexities of sex work, the impacts of Bill C-36 and next steps for the newly elected government of Canada.
