On Wednesday, January 18th, the Department of Law and Legal Studies marked the launch of its 50th anniversary, coinciding with Carleton’s 75th anniversary celebrations. In 1967, the Department of Law and Legal Studies emerged as the first unit in Canada to study law within an interdisciplinary context. Since then, it has grown to offer the largest and most extensive undergraduate and graduate programs in legal studies in the country. The anniversary launch reception was held on campus with department staff, faculty, contract instructors, students, alumni, and esteemed guests gathering to pay tribute to fifty years of excellence and innovation.
As guests mingled, the Carleton University Law and Legal Studies Society (CULLSS) released its latest issue of the Carleton University Journal of Legal Studies. President Roseann O’Reilly Runte was also in attendance to reflect on the department’s achievements with a few opening remarks. Shortly thereafter, she welcomed to the stage a special guest, Right Honourable Beverley McLachlin, Chief Justice of Canada, who imparted her best wishes for the Department’s continued success.
In honour of this important milestone in the history of the Department, Chair Ron Saunders announced a fundraising campaign towards commemorative scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students in law programs at Carleton.
