Starting in September, 2020, the Department of Law and Legal Studies will host an internship with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
This extraordinary opportunity enables a student enrolled in the MA Legal Studies program to undertake a four-month, paid, part-time placement with the UNHCR office in Ottawa. The student will work closely with UNHCR’s Protection/Legal Unit conducting research on international refugee law and international human rights law, preparing internal reports, compiling and analyzing statistics, and contributing to the advocacy work of the UNHCR. The student will also carry out academic research as part of the internship placement, thus gaining both practical experience and academic credit towards their degree requirements.
The MA Legal Studies Internship will be pursued as a directed reading course, and the student will be selected and supervised by a Department faculty member who is an expert in migration and refugee law.
