Congratulations Jay Ramasubramanyam!
Department of Law and Legal Studies PhD Student and Contract Instructor Jay Ramasubramanyam has been awarded the 2021 Carleton University Contract Instructor Teaching Award in recognition of his teaching excellence.
Ramasubramanyam taught LAWS 2105 (Social Justice and Human Rights), GINS 1010 (International Law and Politics) and HUMR 3301 (Race, Racism, and Human Rights).
Hear what Ramasubramanyam has to say about his award winning approach to teaching:
“As an instructor I strive to integrate literature on colonial legacies and colonial traumas in my pedagogical interventions. This has taken the form of designing content that challenges tradition and creates solidarities across marginalized communities, which are both necessary and stimulating. This enables me to effectively introduce social issues and issues of racial justice to reconstitute knowledge sharing and make steps towards correcting the unequal power dynamics that impact everyday academic interactions.
While I strive to engage in critical pedagogy based on steps taken by other critical pedagogues, my academic journey embodies a deep emotional and ancestral connection. I think about my grandfather Dr. Gopalan Shastri today, who did not have access to the opportunities that I do. However, he has laid a pathway that has led me on this trajectory. I hope one day to do the same for others.”
Congratulations Jay!
