The Department of Law and Legal Studies is pleased to announce that Sami Islam, a third-year Journalism and Law undergraduate student, is a recipient of a 2021 Carleton University Student Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Award valued at $10,000. Congratulations!

Sami Islam

“I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to Sami Islam for his EDI Research Award. Over the summer Sami will be studying prosecutorial discretion and the over-incarceration of racialized people. His project promises to generate some fascinating discussion on an important and timely topic,” says Professor Diana Young, who will be supervising Sami’s research project this summer.

His research will look at the discretion exercised by prosecutors and how it may change based on directives from attorneys general. “My hope is that this project will prompt further investigation on discretion which results in a new approach to exercising discretion which creates a more equitable justice system that does not disproportionately affect people of colour and those who are socioeconomically disadvantaged,” explained Sami.

Congratulations Sami!
