The Taylor Swift Legal Era
Abi Hamilton and Andrea Stuhec-Leornard both just completed their first year of our MA program in Legal Studies. They are also both self-proclaimed Taylor Swift fans, also known as “Swifties.”
So when an opportunity came up to run a week long mini course for local grade 8 students, the topic was a no-brainer.
While one may think of excessive amounts of glitter, expensive concert tickets and boyfriend drama when thinking of Taylor Swift, the pop princess has had a few brushes with the law, and the legal system in general throughout her stardom. Taylor’s popularity around the world, especially with the pre-teen age group makes this a perfect way to give future students an insight into the study of law at the post-secondary level.
“Between the two of us, we figured we could create a fun course for students to learn about law in a fun and dynamic way through real world life examples” – Andrea
A variety of topics were covered throughout the week that connects to various areas of law including copyright issues, record label disputes, fraud concert ticket sales and more!
“Studying law is very interdisciplinary and it’s very applicable to the real world.” -Abi
This is just one of the many creative ways that shows our department’s interdisciplinary approach to Law and Legal Studies.
“Be creative! There are so many things you can do, and it makes it so much more fun if you choose a topic you are passionate about.” – Andrea
