Nikki Liu: Manan Shah Memorial Scholarship recipient

Meet Nikki Liu! Originally from Ottawa, Nikki is pursuing a combined honours BA in Law and Sociology and is this year’s recipient of the Manan Shah Memorial Scholarship.
What lead you to decide to pursue your BA at Carleton?
I chose Carleton because I was interested in its undergraduate Law program. I thought it would be a great opportunity to gain an introduction to legal studies early on! Being close to home was also an important factor, and I also really liked Carleton’s campus, especially how close it is to the canal.
Do you have a favourite part of your program?
My favourite part of my program has been the variety of topics I get to explore in my courses. I appreciate that there are so many different areas of law that I can learn about, especially while I’m still figuring out what interest me the most. I also really appreciate being able to stay connected with some of my professors and the department, as they have been very supportive throughout my time at Carleton and have provided many opportunities for students to get involved and further explore their interests!
What are you hoping to do after graduation and what do you hope to gain from your degree?
After graduation, I hope to attend law school and pursue a career as a lawyer.
Any advice for incoming students?
My biggest advice would be to not be afraid to get involved. Some of my favourite memories from my time at Carleton have come from the people I’ve met and the opportunities I’ve been able to take part in through the university community. Whether it’s joining a club, attending an event, or trying exploring opportunities within your program, don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. You don’t have to say yes to everything, but sometimes taking a small chance can lead to experiences and connections you never expected.
