Feb. 6 | Separating the Good from the Bad: The Global Governance of Illegal Markets

Thursday, February 6, 2014 from 12:00 am to 12:00 am

Speaker: Anja P. Jakobi | Senior Lecturer, Department of Politics and International Relations, Royal Holloway, University of London

This talk presents different types of global illegal markets and related governance efforts: Some illegal markets are completely based on prohibited products, like narcotic drugs, while other illegal markets interact with legal supply or demand. The separation of legal and illegal markets is one of the most complicated governance tasks. At the same time, we face huge institutional variance when it comes to the governance of illegal markets, ranging from state-based forms to completely private regulations. Providing a cross-cutting analysis of different cases of illegal markets and the related governance efforts, this talk shows why specific forms are established and how this impacts on the overall governance aim.

Anja P. Jakobi’s work analyzes global crime, illicit markets and non-traditional security threats. Among her recent publications is Common Goods and Evils? The Formation of Global Crime Governance (Oxford University Press, 2013).

This event is co-sponsored by the Department of Law and Legal Studies and the Institute of Political Economy
