Please join us for an in-person talk with special guest, Luiz Claudio Lourenço on punishment and imprisonment in Brazil. A light reception will follow this event.

Abstract: Prisons in Brazil are the main way of punishing crimes. However, often the normative discourse diverges from reality. Today there is a growing need for us to pose and discuss some fundamental questions. Is prison space unilaterally controlled by the state? Are the prisoners who committed the most heinous crimes the ones who are punished the most and kept under the greatest surveillance? Is the prison an institution managed and maintained by the State? Ultimately, is there even a prison system in Brazil?

About the speaker: Luiz Claudio Lourenço graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree (1997) and obtained a Master’s Degree (2000) in Social Sciences from the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar). Luiz holds a PhD in Political Science (2007) from the University Research Institute of Rio de Janeiro (IUPERJ). He is a professor at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) working in the Department of Sociology and professor of the Graduate Program in Social Sciences (PPGCS-UFBA).
