Please join us for a talk with public scholar and abortion care provider Dr. Martha Paynter as she explains how abortion is governed in Canada without an abortion law and why experts advocate against one. In her new book, Lawless: Abortion Access Under Complete Decriminalization (Fernwood 2025), Paynter describes abortion policy, practice and experience and discusses how to resolve challenges to access that continue almost four decades since Canada became the most legally progressive jurisdiction for abortion in the world.
About the Speaker: Martha Paynter is Associate Professor in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of New Brunswick with a specialization in reproductive health and the criminal legal system. She is the author of Abortion to Abolition: Reproductive Health and Justice (Fernwood 2022) and has an extensive record of publication in the fields of sexual and reproductive health and prisoner rights. She is dedicated to collaboration with community health and justice organizations.
