JurisTalk – Paying for Sex: Socio-Legal Regulation and the Self-Conception of Clients

Tuesday, March 13, 2018 from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm

Speakers:

Abstract: In 2014, the Conservative government ushered in legislation on sex work that targets, in large part, those who purchase sexual services. This new legal framework is the latest exemplar of the changing cultural discourse relating to sex work clients, beginning with the relative tolerance of male clients in the Victorian era, to the current deviantization of paying for sex. In this talk, we draw on historical narratives, sexology, and feminist and queer theory, as well as clients’ own postings on an online sex work review forum to trace the evolving socio-legal context in Canada.
