During the Biden administration, Canada began aligning its trade policy closely with the United States. It followed its neighbor in imposing tighter restrictions on Chinese foreign direct investment and mirrored American China-specific tariffs on electric vehicles and steel. Moreover, together with other western states, Canada used the G7 to coordinate in the face of Chinese economic coercion and non-market practices. The election has upended that alignment. Canada now faces economic threats not only from China, but also the United States. The talk will dissect Canada’s perilous economic security position from a legal and policy perspective and evaluate possible pathways forward.
This event will be hybrid. A Zoom link will be sent to participants upon registration. Lunch will be provided for in-person attendees.
