Congratulations to Political Science Professor William Cross. Not only did he attend convocation to hood his PhD student Alisson Lévesque, but he also crossed the stage to receive a Graduate Diploma in Philanthropy and Non-profit Leadership.

“I was interested in the program since its inception in 2013 https://carleton.ca/mpnl/about/. It is the only program of its kind in Canada. I was interested in learning more about the philanthropic sector in Canada and about issues relating to non-profit governance. As part of the program, I conducted research relating to board governance of Canada’s national sports organizations (NSOs). This is a timely subject as there has been considerable recent criticism of the way high performance sport, in particular, is organized and delivered in Canada. Sport Canada has called for significant reform in governance structures and operations of the NSOs. This has been helpful to me as I teach a fourth year seminar on Sport and Politics in our Department.

The program attracts many mid-career students who are already working in the non-profit sector. It was a fascinating collection of folks from whom I learned a great deal. I believe in life-long learning and this program offered me that opportunity.

It was great fun to be on the other side of the classroom after several decades of teaching. My recommendation is that every professor should occasionally take a class to remember what its like to be a student!”
