Nativism and Internal Migration In Canada

Opposition to internal migration is a phenomenon observed across diverse political systems and geographical contexts. Yet, despite its prevalence and significant social and political implications, scholarship on internal migration remains limited—particularly when compared to the vast literature on international migration. This presentation addresses that gap by examining the role of nativism in shaping responses to internal migration in Canada. We begin by situating opposition to internal migration within broader theoretical debates on nativism and migration politics. We then outline the political and institutional contexts in which such opposition emerges. Finally, we share preliminary findings from a recent survey that explores the conditions under which opposition to internal migration arises in Canada.

All are welcome.
