Dr. Guillaume Gentil was a plenary speaker at the CCERBAL 2018 Conference, on Translanguaging: Opportunities and Challenges in a Global World, which was held at the Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute (OLBI), University of Ottawa. The plenary, first available to Facebook users, can now be viewed on YouTube. In keeping with a translanguaging approach, the presentation switched between English and French while offering written and visual support in the other language. Gentil’s interest in translanguaging emerged in relation to a five-year SSHRC-funded program of research, Developing academic biliteracy: Longitudinal case studies of learning to write in Canada’s official language, currently underway in collaboration with Jérémie Séror, OLBI, and Fanny Meunier, Université catholique de Louvain, Belgium. One focus of this research project is to better understand how multilingual university students learn to juggle languages, modalities, and communities, for example writing in French from English sources and vice versa, and how instruction and institutions can help support such balancing acts.
