This year’s Phil Boland Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Felix Cardinal Tremblay (a Software Engineering major with a Japanese minor), and Page Noualy (a Computer Science major with a Japanese minor). The scholarship was established by the Boland family after their son passed away on November 18, 2019, during his studies at Carleton. Phil was a biology student who pursued Japanese as a minor. Both his family and friends witnessed how Phil blossomed in university. He was relentlessly curious and passionate about what he was learning, qualities his instructors appreciated. Over time, his growing love for Japanese was apparent not only in the courses he took but in his extra-curricular pursuits. He participated in the Japanese Speech Contest and became very active in CUJA, Carleton’s Japanese Association. He planned to take the challenge of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT), which Carleton started to host three years ago. To honour and celebrate Phil’s life, the family chose to award a scholarship to students minoring in Japanese who share Phil’s passion for the language. This year’s recipients admirably satisfy this requirement.
