Teaching and Learning Services recently announced that seventeen projects have been awarded funding through the Carleton University Experiential Learning Fund (CUELF), and we are pleased to share that Professor Brian Strong’s project was selected in this first round of funding for the 2023-24 CUELF.
Strong’s project, titled “Empowering ESL Educators: Bridging Theory, Practice, and the Real-World Landscape of TESL in Canada,” aims to enhance the experiential learning element in the Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) courses that are offered in the School of Linguistics and Language Studies.
“It focuses on expanding students’ real-world experiences in English language teaching and elevating the impact of the practicum component.”
Brian Strong, Assistant Professor (Applied Linguistics and Discourse Studies) and CTESL Coordinator
The practicum provides invaluable experience in English as a Second Language (ESL) classrooms, offering students an opportunity to develop essential teaching skills and classroom management techniques. It also invites opportunities for feedback and reflection, and often facilitates networking with professionals in the field.
Strong seeks to enhance the practicum in TESL by increasing connections with local employers, inviting guest speakers, and offering students new professional development opportunities through workshops and networking events.
“The practicum component has long been the cornerstone of our CTESL program for preparing our students to teach once they graduate. The initiatives conceived by Dr. Strong, and realized through this fund, only serve to increase the preparedness of our students for the complex educational situation they will soon face.”
