The 2024 TESL Ontario Conference, “Navigating New Routes in Language Education,” held online November 13 to 15, brought together educators, researchers, and professionals focused on teaching English as a second or additional language. Carleton University’s School of Linguistics and Language Studies (SLaLS) was prominently represented at the event, with five presenters — the highest number from any post-secondary institution at the conference.
Our presenters showcased a diverse range of research, teaching methodologies, and practical applications, reflecting the innovation and dedication within our department.
- Zahra Aghaee: “Automated Essay Scoring in Language Assessment”
- Julie McCarroll, Mike Murphy, and Peggy Hartwick: “Stop, Start, Continue? Which EAP Skills Transfer Best?”
- Don Myles and Julie McCarroll: “The New Reality of AI: Updating EAP Assessments”
This strong showing underscores Carleton University’s leadership in the field of TESL. We are proud of our presenters for their contributions and for highlighting the meaningful work being done within SLaLS.
