36th Japanese Speech Contest in Ottawa
On March 1st, the 36th Annual Japanese Speech Contest took place in the auditorium of the Japanese Embassy in Ottawa.
The participants were students learning the language in Ottawa and the Kingston region, taking part across four levels: beginner, intermediate, advanced, and open. Each contestant selected their own speech topic, with some sharing personal experiences or reflections, while others explored their fascination with Japan and various aspects of Japanese culture.

This year, ten Carleton students, enrolled in different levels of JAPA courses, delivered heartfelt speeches in their respective categories.

Our interim school director, Dr. Geoff Pinchbeck, was in attendance and gave a short speech during the opening ceremony.
Here are this year’s prize recipients from Carleton:
Intermediate Category:
- 1st Lucy Lu, Friendship, Like the Changing Season
- 2nd Joshua Thompson, Blossoming
Advanced Category:
- 3rd Marian Zazulya, The Cost of Convenience
Special Prizes:
- Youssuf Hichri, Green Tunisia
- Archisman Nath, Can I Do It or Not?
The winner of the intermediate category, Lucy Lu, will represent the Ottawa region in the National Contest at York University in Toronto on March 30.
Congratulations to all the participants for their dedication and hard work!
