4th Annual Korean Speech Contest

Carleton students competed in the 4th annual Korean Speech Contest on Friday, February 28 here at the University.

There were 20 presenters in three categories (beginner, intermediate, and advanced) and topics ranged from K-Drama and K-Pop to sweet and sour pork, the history of the Korean peninsula, and the impact of a grandparent’s choice on the life paths of their descendants.

The event was engaging and well-attended and the competition was stiff. Judges had difficult decisions to make.

Final winners were:

From left to right: Dr. Geoff Pinchbeck, Katherine Scheidl, Rachelle Share, and Brennard Indanan

In addition to their monetary prizes, Rachel, Brennard, and Katherine will be traveling to Toronto during the weekend of March 15 to compete in the 19th Annual Toronto Korean Speech & K-Pop Contest.

Congratulations and thanks to all students who participated!

A special thanks to the dynamic trio of Korean instructors who planned the event, to our committed panel of judges, and to Seungjun Lee who taught the audience how to do origami while judges deliberated.

We extend our profound gratitude to the 2025 Korean Studies Grant Program of the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS-2025-E-019) for their financial support, the School of Linguistics and Language Studies for hosting the event, and OK Mart for their donation of performer swag, all of which made this event possible.
