Carleton University Hosts Fifth Japanese Language Proficiency Test
More than 300 test takers were on campus on Sunday, December 7 to write the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT), a standardized assessment recognized worldwide as a “reliable means of evaluating and certifying the Japanese proficiency of non-native speakers.”
This was the fifth time we have offered the assessment here at the university, and it was, by far, our largest cohort with participants – both current and past Carleton students as well as community members – driving and flying in from out of town to participate.
JLPT organizers Mami Sasaki and Kaori Sugimura, both Japanese language instructors in Carleton’s Japanese program, were pleased with how smoothly this year’s session ran.
“It was nice to see such a vibrant Japanese language learning community,” said Sugimura after testing wrapped up.
Carleton, where the test is hosted by the School of Linguistics and Language Studies in collaboration with Scheduling and Examination Services, is one of three testing locations in Ontario (one of five in Canada) that offers the test each year.
The JLPT is administered by the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services and, since its inauguration in 1984, testing has expanded to more than 80 countries worldwide.
