Celebrating Fall 2025 SLaLS Graduates

This fall, we celebrate and welcome nine graduates to the SLaLS Class of 2025. Faculty and staff in the School of Linguistics and Language Studies are proud of the students who recently completed their degrees. A hearty congratulations to the newest members of the Class of 2025!

Special congratulations are in order for the inaugural graduating class of our Master of Arts in Teaching English as an Additional Language (MA TEAL) program. Professor Brian Strong, who coordinates the MA TEAL program, is pleased to welcome the first MA TEAL cohort to the SLaLS Class of 2025.

“Congratulations to the inaugural graduating class of our MA TEAL program! This cohort marks a significant and proud milestone for the School of Linguistics and Language Studies. The MA TEAL program is an intensive, one-year program designed to prepare international students to become professional English language educators around the world. We are incredibly proud of this group’s dedication and accomplishments. We are excited to see them take their new expertise into the field and wish them all the best in their careers.” 

To help us mark this important milestone we spoke with three graduates to learn more about their time with SLaLS and to find out what is in store for them next. Read more about these inspiring graduates below.

Shelby Dale | Bachelor of Science Honours, Linguistics with a Concentration in Psycholinguistics and Communication Differences

Shelby Dale

Shelby completed a Bachelor of Science Honours in Linguistics with a concentration in Psycholinguistics and Communication Differences, and now attends the University of Alberta, where she is completing a master’s in Speech-Language Pathology.

“Everyone in SLaLS is there to support you so never be afraid to reach out for help. I am incredibly grateful for the professors, mentorship, and experiences at Carleton that helped shape my path toward this field!”

Thea Groenhaug | Master of Arts, Linguistics

Thea Groenhaug

Thea graduated with a Master of Arts in Linguistics. Her thesis was titled “Neurodiversity in Foreign Language Classrooms: An Examination of Assessment Types.”

“I have loved my time being part of SLaLS at Carleton! The enthusiastic support I received from my professors has been integral to my development as an early researcher, and the close-knit community in the School truly helped me feel welcome and made my first steps into the world of academic research way less scary.”

Since wrapping up her master’s, Thea has been taking some time to recharge and focus on PhD applications.

“I’m hoping to build on my MA research into neurodivergent foreign language learning by focusing on how we can work with the traits of neurodivergence to foster positive learning experiences for neurodivergent people,” Thea shares.

Xin Pang | Master of Arts, Teaching English as an Additional Language

Xin graduated with a Master of Arts in Teaching English as an Additional Language (MA TEAL).

“My time with SLaLS has been full of care, support, and encouragement. I have gained meaningful insights into teaching, which have deepened my passion and confidence in language education.”

“Moving forward, I will carry the spirit and inspiration I found here into my future studies and career,” Xin shares.
