In October 2025, the Korean language teaching team hosted an event to celebrate Hangeul Day, a public holiday dedicated to the Korean alphabet. During the event, attendees tried on many different colours and styles of hanbok (traditional Korean clothing), learned how to make kimbap, and recited poetry.

In honour of the occasion, members of the Carleton University community were invited to design a T-shirt that creatively incorporated the shapes of the Hangeul characters. Our team of Korean language instructors evaluated the designs based on creativity, cultural relevance, visual impact, and clarity.

Ten finalist designs were showcased at the Hangeul Day event on October 10, where Chiamaka Ezekwem claimed the first place prize of $500 for her winning T-shirt design.

Many thanks again to the Korean teaching team for planning and hosting the event, and to the Academy of Korean Studies for their generous support.
