Japanese Students visit Carleton

A group of fifteen Political Science students from Japan’s Ritsumeikan University visited Carleton Friday as part of their 10-day whirlwind tour of Canada. During their visit, the group met with students from Carleton’s Japanese language courses to get to know one another better (in English and Japanese) and to have some deeper conversations on topics related to Canadian culture. Specifically:

• multicultualism in Canada
• English and French language education for immigrants
• the role of the ethnic neighbourhoods in Canadian cities
• heritage language learners

In addition to students from the Japanese classes, the group was joined by ESLA professor Mike Murphy, School Director and ALDS professor Don Myles, and LING graduate student, Kamala Muthukumarasamy, whose research explores Heritage language learning in Canada’s Tamil community.

The group heads to Toronto next then on to Niagara Falls.

Thanks to Ritsumeikan University professors Drs. Hideki Kido and Taiki Narita for including Carleton in their travel plans and to Japanese Coordinator Yoriko Aizu, for all her hard work in organizing the event.
