Korean Language Instructors Present at the 8th Annual CATK Conference
Three Korean language instructors from Carleton University participated in the 8th Annual Conference of the Canadian Association of Teachers of Korean (CATK), held August 11–12, 2026, at the University of Winnipeg in Winnipeg, Manitoba. This year’s conference, “Cultural and Historical Dimensions in Korean Language Education,” brought together Korean language educators and researchers to explore innovative approaches to Korean language, culture, and history education.
Carleton University was represented by Hyoun Jeong Yoo, Soyoung Kang, and Seunghee Chung, who each presented on topics related to Korean language and culture education.
Hyoun Jeong Yoo presented “From Watching to Reflecting: Using Korean Films to Develop Cultural and Historical Awareness in Beginner KFL Classrooms.” Her presentation explored how Korean films can be integrated into beginner Korean as a Foreign Language (KFL) classrooms to move learners beyond language practice toward deeper engagement with Korean cultural and historical contexts.
Soyoung Kang presented “Developing a University-Level Korean Culture Course and Further Exploration of Potential Topics.” Her presentation examined the development of a university-level Korean culture course and considered potential topics and directions for expanding students’ cultural learning.
Seunghee Chung presented “A Discussion Portfolio for Advanced Korean Learners: Supporting Student Engagement and Cultural Learning.” Her presentation highlighted the use of a discussion portfolio to encourage active participation among advanced Korean learners while supporting meaningful cultural learning.
The conference provided an opportunity for Carleton’s Korean language instructors to share their teaching and research with Korean language educators from across Canada and beyond, while also exchanging ideas about innovative approaches to Korean language, culture, and history education.
The participation of all three instructors reflects Carleton University’s ongoing commitment to enriching Korean language education through culturally responsive and innovative teaching practices.
