Korean Language Minor opens doors to EPIK Adventure
Exciting times for recent graduate Rachel Share as she heads off to Korea to teach English as a member of this year’s English Program in Korea (EPIK) cohort. Administered by the National Institute for International Education, an arm of South Korea’s Ministry of Education, the program recruits and places English speakers in schools across the country each year.
Rachel graduated in June with a BA (Honours with High Distinction) in English and a Minor in Korean Language. In addition to her studies, Rachel also participated in Carleton’s Korean Speech Contest, taking home prizes in both 2024 and 2025 and went on to represent Carleton at the Toronto Speech Contest where she took 2nd place in the Intermediate category in 2024 and 1st place in the Advanced category in 2025.
Now, with all this great preparation, she looks forward to using everything she has learned to immerse herself in the challenges of daily life in a new and exciting culture!
“I’m really grateful for this (experience). I met a lot of really lovely people through the (Korean) program…and I also think that it helped me because I’m now going to Korea to teach English and I know that during my interview when I brought up that I could speak Korean, the interviewer was very interested and added it to my application and I think that that probably helped.”
And so, as she heads out to her placement in Chungcheongbukdo, the Korean teaching team wishes her all the best in this next chapter of her life and looks forward to keeping in touch.
