Julie McCarroll and Mike Murphy Receive 2026 CU-CUASA Special Fund for EDI Research and Pedagogical Innovation
Congratulations to Julie McCarroll and Mike Murphy for receiving a 2026 CU-CUASA Special Fund for EDI Research and Pedagogical Innovation. The fund recognizes research excellence and pedagogical innovation by members of equity-driven groups or on topics that emphasize equity, diversity, and inclusion at Carleton University.

For their joint project, McCarroll and Murphy will develop a series of interactive, multi-media Brightspace modules and in-person workshops to help faculty members across the university promote a more equitable and inclusive classroom experience for the diverse group of learners that is Carleton’s international students.
Given that their expertise lies in teaching and learning of additional languages, these modules and workshops will:
- raise faculty member awareness of how their handling of language choices and cultural references can help level the playing field for their non-native speaker students
- provide professors with strategies for re-framing the multilingualism of some of their students as a strength, rather than a weakness
- emphasize how to mitigate cultural bias within the curriculum and enrich the learning experience for all by providing opportunities and encouragement for intercultural exchange and social/academic networking between domestic and international students
In preparation for the development of these faculty training materials, McCarroll and Murphy will be conducting a research study to gather input from Carleton international students and faculty members.
