Film Screening | “Home is Somewhere Else”

Join us for a screening of “Home is Somewhere Else”, a film from Jorge Villalobos (in his directorial debut) and award-winning director, Carlos Hagerman.

A panel discussion will follow the screening featuring Carlos Hagerman and Carleton Political Science professor, Dr. Laura MacDonald. Dr. MacDonald has written extensively on citizenship struggles in Latin America, Canada-Mexico relations, transnational activism, and more.

Home is Somewhere Else 14 November, 2024 (6:00 p.m.) Carleton University, 303 SP. Carlos Hagerman studied Communication in Mexico City and earned a Fulbright scholarship to pursue a master's in Film Direction at NYU. He worked with Alejandro - Gonzalez Iharritu’s production company and later founded La Sombra del Guayabo. His first documentary, Those Who Remain (2008), co-directed with Juan Carlos Rulfo, won multiple awards,including Best Documentary at the Guadalajara International Film Festival. He also directed Vuelve a la Vida (2010) and El Patio de Mi Casa (2015), both of which had successful festival runs and theatrical releases in Mexico. In 2012, Carlos co-founded Brinca Animation Studio with Jorge Villaobos, producing animated projects for children and human rights organizations like UNICEF. Their latest film, Home Is Somewhere Else (2022), won international acclaim, including the IDFA’s Best Documentary for Young Audiences and the Ariel Award for Best Animated Feature (2023). Carlos has also produced work for filmmakers like Maya Goded (Plaza de la Soledad, Sundance 2016) and Luciana Kaplan (Rush Hour, SXSW 2017).
